Sports Premium
In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport provision.
Funding will be allocated to all maintained and state-funded schools with primary phase pupils, including: primary, middle, special and non-maintained special schools, academies and pupil referral units from 1 September 2013.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport we offer such as:
- Developing or adding to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
- Building capacity and capability within school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
- The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport

We have built capacity and capability at Downsway to ensure that improvements which have been made this year are sustainable and will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
Raised profile of PE/Sport
The profile of PE/sport and the importance of the children having good mental health continues to be raised across the school through the provision and opportunities we have provided our pupils at Downsway Primary School. In addition, we have shared this with our parents/carers via our newsletters and with all our pupils during whole school assemblies. As a result, it has acted as an additional motivator for our pupils to do well in lessons as our pupils are keen to be selected to represent Downsway at sporting competitions and to take part in the opportunities available.

- Provided the children with lunchtime football club.
- Whole school sporting events, such as Race for Life, sports day, Santa Dash, etc.
